Initially, we get the impression that subversive activities are afoot. Spying, maybe something illegal. Armed police storm into room 303, where sits a young woman in front of a laptop.

Back in the street, the police lieutenant is approached by three CIA or FBI like agents. They reprimand the lieutenant, which he shrugs off with the air of someone who just doing the same run of the mill job he’s always done. Like so many of us, when a job becomes routine, we become blasé and ignore warnings as the ego says “I know what I’m doing.” The suspect was just a girl. Hardly a force to be reckoned with.

But, looks can be deceiving. For most people, what they see is real. The cops see a slim, sexy woman wearing the skin tight leather clothing, of what could be initially construed as a cheap tart or prostitute. In society, attire defines who you are according to its restraints. According to the rules of society, a young woman does not wear clothing that shows more of her figure than taboo allows, unless she is selling sexual favours or rebelling against those taboos. In Trinity’s case, it is partially the latter, but she is also aware that such taboos are nothing more than an illusory construct. She is quite comfortable with her own sexuality and aware that in the Matrix, it gives her an advantage. Let’s face it, you were distracted by her shapely leather clad backside (regardless of gender or sexual orientation), weren’t you?

Although Trinity is exceptionally feminine, she is also capable of emotionless acts of aggression. She is far more that her appearances portray and easily capable of protecting herself.

The Matrix is everywhere, it’s all around us, here even in this room. You can see it out your window or on your television. You feel it when you go to work, or go to church or pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

Morpheus – The Matrix

Even for those who are not computer geeks, the Matrix story resonates on psychological or spiritual level. It asks a fundamental question that somehow connects deep in our psyche.

For some, it may be the Cartesian philosophical question, for others it may be the idea of an interconnectedness that binds us to each other and the universe. For others still, it may be about a hidden organisation that secretly controls the world. Of course, there’s always those that like it because it’s a kick-ass action movie with superhuman characters and cool martial arts scenes.

We are told this is his hacker name, a pseudonym that he uses to identify himself amongst those who appreciate and recognise his skills as a programmer. This represents his alter-ego, his higher self, his spirit, his dreams… who he wants to be. With the right support and encouragement, that skill could be nurtured and REALLY used.

Many people have (or had) and idea of what they wanted to do… who they wanted to be. Very often this is drummed out of us by overbearing parents or an education system that was set up for an industrial age, moulding people into dull dreary automatons ready for the production line or office.

Eventually, he becomes his higher self and above all expectations, and through his own self sacrifice, the saviour of the world.

In this, of course, he mirrors many other mythological heroes, Osiris, Tammuz and most notably Jesus Christ.
