Though he is also a military man, Mifune is not militaristic like Commander Lock. His natural abilities are what got him to his position rather than adherence to procedure (he failed to complete his APU training). As such, he also has the ability to recognise similar potential in others and is willing to bend the rules when they don’t fit the circumstances. He is a good leader because he is respected rather than feared. He can do the things he expects from his subordinates and he is willing to stand alongside them when necessary.

Yes, they may be as irritating as hell, but they mean well and may have important parts to play in the future. IF, they are encouraged. Yet, he rubs shoulders with the rich and powerful, controls a train (transport) and is untouchable in his own domain. He ships stuff in and out of the Matrix for the Merovingian, including stuff that does not belong there.

He is, of course, a drugs trafficker, arms dealer and smuggler. He is seen, by society, as the lowest of the low, yet is very powerful and deals with the upper echelons of society. He’s the arms dealer that does deals with presidents and prime ministers. He is the drugs dealer that supplies movie stars and politicians. He is the guy that can provide that illegal artefact, made from an endangered species, for the high end business executive.

Little Sati appears only to play a minor role, but she is symbolic of something much more important. The offspring of Rama-Kandra (manager for recycling operations) and Kamala (an interactive software programmer).

We are told that in the machine world she is not required, that she does not have a purpose and as such, will be deleted. But at the end of Revolutions, we get a glimpse of what Sati can do…

…She can make the world beautiful.

She is representative of all those organisations and individuals that are listening to what people really want and to what the planet needs. They are trying to make the world a better place for all: a more sustainable ecosystem; a less stressful place; a more caring society; etc. But, these people are not required by the system and are, therefore, fighting a losing battle. Unless, they can be rescued by making a deal with someone in power. We have no idea of the arrangement between Rama-Kandra and the Merovingian, but we can be assured it was dodgy and biased toward the Merovingian.

In this world, unless something is economically viable, it doesn’t happen.

We know the Architect designed the Matrix. He appears to be a symbol of God, indeed, the Freemasons refer to God as “The Great Architect” and the TV screens all around him indicate omnipresence. Yet he required the Oracle to make the Matrix work because although his first Matrix was “perfect”, it catastrophically failed.

Oracle: Please. You and I may not be able to see beyond our own choices, but that man can’t see past any choice.

Neo: Why not?

Oracle: He doesn’t understand them, he can’t. To him they are variables and equations. One at a time each must be solved and counted. That’s his purpose: to balance the equation.

The Matrix Revolutions

Of course he does represent God… or rather one side of God. He is the masculine principle, pure logic and mathematics. In his mind everything is black and white. He is control using reason.

In Greek mythology, Hades is considered the god of wealth because the crops come from below, when, in truth it is Persephone that causes them to grow. In the Matrix, Persephone has access to the Keymaker.

The keys he makes give access to… everything.

Each key is made individually, each with its own unique shape… or code.

The Keymaker symbolises money… the method by which access to everything is gained, and wealth maintained.

Decadent, powerful, surrounded by luxury, the Merovingian name comes from a line of Frankish kings that ruled France in about 500AD.

The dynasty was started by Merovech, who maintained that he was of the bloodline of Jesus Christ. There is also another clue as to his archetype offered by Persephone:

“A long time ago, when we first came here, it was so different. He was so different. He was like you.”

Persphone – The Matrix Reloaded

Referring, of course, to Neo.

There are also hints to his archetype with the name of his wife, “Persephone” and the name of his club. Although we don’t really know the name of the club, it is accessed through a button in the elevator. The button, originally an emergency button marked “HELP” has had the “P” scratched off, leaving it marked as “HEL”. Persephone was, in Greek mythology, the wife of Hades, Hades being the god of the underworld. The underworld was the realm of the dead, which later became the Christian hell. Hades was not though, the devil. His realm also included Gaia (the earth) and he was considered to be the god of wealth, because wealth came from the ground.

In the Matrix, the Merovingian controls all things “material” and political. He represents the power structure. He is not just the president, emperor or king, he is symbolic of the whole structure.

But… power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. He’s gone bad. Far more interested in his own welfare than his true purpose, ie. the welfare of others. As Persephone points out…”Pompous prick.”

The clue is in his name. Seraph (or seraphim) are part of the order of angels in many religions. He also tells us:

“I protect that which matters most.”

Seraph – The Matrix Reloaded

Now, although the Oracle is not necessarily representative of the Judaic or Christian God, she is representative of religion. As such, Seraph is the protector of religion. He is powerful, but prefers peace, only using violence when necessary.

The Vatican has its own small army, Shaolin monks have Kung Fu. This is what Seraph symbolises.
